About
Situated to the west of the Isthmus, Horizon High School serves students aged 14 to 18, maintaining a 5:1 ratio of students to faculty members. It is the sole recovery school in Wisconsin, offering both individual counseling and group therapy for those facing substance abuse challenges or those at risk, all while continuing their academic studies. Horizon accommodates 10 to 15 students at any one time but has the capacity for up to 21, allowing midyear enrollment. To inspire students, guest speakers and staff share their personal recovery stories. The educational program includes subjects such as science, math, English, and social studies, with a focus on real-world applications like U.S. healthcare and cultural reflections within literature. Physical education activities are conducted through off-site gym sessions. Additionally, their life skills-oriented field trips visit places like the Henry Vilas Zoo, various parks, farms, libraries, ice skating rinks, amusement parks, and more. Horizon also emphasizes community engagement through volunteer opportunities in the Madison area.
Horizon High School's admission process is voluntary, ensuring that students are enrolling of their own volition, and they must sign a commitment to stay alcohol and drug-free throughout their tenure there. A requirement is that students must be sober for 30 days prior to entry, with staff conducting random drug tests weekly to monitor continued sobriety.
Students participate in regular group therapy sessions and have access to an on-site counselor for individual discussions. Moreover, Horizon High School mandates that each student maintains a support network outside the school context, such as a counselor, psychiatrist, social worker, or sponsor.
To support families, Horizon High School organizes monthly evening meetings allowing parents, guardians, and relatives to connect with other families who are navigating the challenges associated with addiction and mental health issues.
