About
'Ai Pono boasts over 35 years of expertise in treating eating disorders and is recognized as the longest-established eating disorder program in Hawaii. Catering to individuals aged 13 and older, 'Ai Pono provides residential treatment exclusively for women and girls, as well as partial hospitalization (PHP) and in-person intensive outpatient programming (IOP). For those residing in Hawaii, virtual IOP options are also available.
Situated in the picturesque setting of Maui, Hawaii, 'Ai Pono features a traditional Japanese-style home that promotes a soothing atmosphere. With its vaulted ceilings and spacious layout, the facility is filled with natural light. The serene location also allows clients to engage in off-site excursions to local beaches, significant cultural landmarks like Iao Valley, the stunning Kula lavender farm, and popular shopping areas. The center is conveniently located just a short stroll from the beach, encouraging clients to enjoy mindful walks by the water.
'Ai Pono emphasizes the connection between food and eating disorders through a holistic approach that aims to identify and address the underlying causes of these disorders. The program considers harmful eating habits as symptoms to be treated, alongside related challenges such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and body dysmorphia.
The women's residential program incorporates psychotherapy sessions three times a week and daily psychoeducational groups. Family participation is promoted and supported by experienced clinicians according to the treatment plan. Meals and snacks are provided as therapeutic experiences, with input from the support team, tailored to meet each client's unique dietary requirements. Clients also have weekly consultations with a Registered Dietitian to discuss their meal plans and nutrition therapies.
'Ai Pono’s virtual IOP is accessible to individuals of all genders aged 13 and above, designed to adapt to each client's recovery journey with flexible support options based on their progress.
The center employs a range of therapeutic techniques, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and internal family systems (IFS), along with trauma-informed care, eye movement therapy (EMDR), and somatic therapy. In addition, holistic therapies such as gentle yoga, mindfulness practices, sound therapy, and nature-based therapy offer clients a comprehensive healing experience for both mind and body.'
