Caritas Malta - San Blas Therapeutic Community

Caritas Malta, established in 1968, is a Catholic initiative dedicated to supporting people facing challenging times. In accordance with Catholic values, the organization assists individuals on their paths to recovery. The Caritas Male Shelter provides a residential program for men in a nurturing, home-like atmosphere that facilitates a non-clinical six-week detoxification process, preparing them for continued treatment options with Caritas Malta, including the evening program or the San Blas Rehabilitation Programme. Situated on the outskirts of Żebbuġ, the San Blas Programme spans six months and is divided into two phases. During the initial five months, residents engage in therapeutic activities, embrace community living, enhance their leadership abilities, and develop essential life skills. The final month, known as the “request phase,” allows residents to gradually reintroduce themselves to society with limited hours of freedom each week. Caritas Malta also features a Prison Inmate Programme (PIP) based in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, specifically designed to assist inmates dealing with substance use disorders. Inmates enrolled in this program may receive supervised leave from prison. For those transitioning from residential care, Caritas Malta provides an evening program combining individual and group therapy aimed at preventing relapse and improving life skills. Topics addressed include codependency, gambling addiction, self-esteem issues, and anger management. The organization also extends help with legal matters, health challenges, and job support. Additionally, they facilitate Gamblers Anonymous, GamAnon (for family members), and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Aftercare services are available at Dar Charles Miceli, where semi-residential support is offered, and individuals are encouraged to visit or call for assistance anytime. Engaging activities are also organized to foster a sense of community and belonging.
