About
Recognized with the Dalai Lama Humanitarian Award in 2014 for its impactful approach to addiction recovery, John Volken Academy offers meticulously organized, individualized care across three residential facilities. The center located in Washington State specializes in comprehensive treatment for men aged 19 to 44 who are dealing with substance use disorders or addiction accompanied by co-occurring mental health issues, all within a 24-month, therapeutic community-focused program.
Nestled in a picturesque setting near Seattle with breathtaking views of Mt. Rainier, clients, referred to as students, find themselves in a peaceful, nature-oriented atmosphere that fosters healing and growth.
The center employs a therapeutic community framework that combines a variety of evidence-supported techniques with training in vocational and life skills. This community-based model allows students to practice the tools they learn in treatment, encouraging them to engage in leadership roles as they take on more responsibilities within their peers' support network.
Each resident follows a structured daily schedule that includes three hours of therapeutic activities in both individual and group formats, five days a week. They are also able to pursue educational opportunities or gain vocational experience through employment in a local furniture and home goods shop managed by JVA. The program emphasizes practical career development, turning personal talents into valuable job skills. Students have roles in meal preparation, serving, and cleanup, alongside various household tasks that instill a sense of responsibility and achievement. Additional recreational activities, fitness programs, and creative expression are incorporated into personalized treatment plans as a form of therapy.
The program is deeply committed to equipping residents with the tools necessary for sustained sobriety over two years. Treatment encompasses four key phases: the first phase identifies the underlying issues and harmful behaviors linked to substance use through intensive therapy; the second phase aims to restore brain function by creating a conducive healing environment and allowing time for the brain to recalibrate; the third phase assists clients in adopting healthier lifestyles as they learn more about themselves during recovery; the final phase involves re-entry support, helping establish a strong foundation for successful long-term sobriety outside of the recovery environment.
Comprehensive aftercare and alumni support include transitional services and relapse prevention strategies. As students approach the end of their program, they are invited to participate in a re-entry support initiative, which pairs them with mentors and guides them in essential life skills, such as financial management, resume writing, and job application processes to facilitate a smooth transition back into everyday life.
For graduates wishing for a gradual transition, John Volken Academy offers economical transitional housing options conveniently located near the campus.
