About
Stephen Center is a vital resource for the Omaha, Nebraska community, offering essential services such as food, clothing, and shelter. This family-run facility provides both residential and outpatient programs designed to help individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Their services include sober living arrangements, emergency shelter for those experiencing homelessness, and opportunities for donations.
The center adheres to regulations set forth by the Omaha Housing Authority and utilizes criteria from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture to assess eligibility for low-income and homeless individuals.
Through its HERO Program, Stephen Center supports adults aged 19 and older who are low-income or homeless, addressing substance use issues as well as co-occurring mental health conditions. They offer medication management and training in life skills to help clients build healthier lifestyles.
Their short-term residential program spans 30 to 45 days, beginning with a two-week blackout period during which only immediate family can visit and phone contact is restricted. Following this, both clients and their families engage in four weeks of programming. Counselors and case managers evaluate clients’ situations to tailor discharge plans.
The intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment typically lasts 6 to 10 weeks, with clients expected to secure employment within the first two weeks. For those unable to work, the center assists in finding volunteer positions. The less intensive outpatient program runs for 4 to 6 weeks, during which clients are encouraged to keep their jobs or continue volunteering.
Stephen Center’s 90-day short-term sober living program serves as a transitional option, while their Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) program offers longer-term accommodations.
The Permanent Supportive Housing Apartments provide a sober living environment with 1-4 bedroom units, accepting applications from individuals whose incomes do not exceed 30% of the median income in Omaha. As part of the admission process, PSH conducts background checks.
The Pettigrew Emergency Shelter at Stephen Center welcomes sober individuals, both adults and children, who are without housing. The center offers a range of essential items, including beds, food, blankets, laundry supplies, over-the-counter medication, toiletries, and other household goods. Donations can be made or picked up during the week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on weekends from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
