About
Founded in 1919, the Austen Riggs Center located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts is committed to assisting adults (18+) facing complex and challenging mental health issues that have proven resistant to traditional treatments. The center features an open campus environment and a focus on intensive clinical engagement, allowing patients the liberty and accountability to confront their challenges, mend meaningful relationships, and take control of their lives.
To achieve this objective, the Austen Riggs Center utilizes a comprehensive, multidisciplinary strategy on its picturesque New England grounds. The primary aim is to support individuals who have encountered difficulties with previous treatments, by tackling the roots of their suffering, delving into the significance of their symptoms, encouraging active participation in their recovery, and highlighting the critical role of interpersonal connections. Each individual’s treatment includes psychodynamic psychotherapy sessions with a doctoral-level clinician occurring four times a week. The center provides a full range of care options, from residential and step-down programs to day treatment. Additionally, there is an engaging therapeutic community program along with a variety of activity offerings such as theater, ceramics, visual arts, fiber crafts, woodworking, and gardening.

Providers Policy
At the Austen Riggs Center, we are committed to making our comprehensive mental health treatment accessible to those in need. We understand that navigating the complexities of insurance coverage can be challenging. Our facility accepts a range of insurance providers, and we encourage prospective patients to contact our admissions team to verify coverage and discuss payment options.
We work closely with patients and their families to explore insurance benefits and assist with the financial aspects of care. Our team is dedicated to providing support throughout the admissions process and can help answer questions regarding co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses.
In addition to insurance coverage, we also offer private pay options to provide flexibility for those who may not have insurance or prefer to pay directly for our services. We believe that everyone deserves access to high-quality mental health care, and we strive to ensure that financial concerns do not stand in the way of receiving the support needed for recovery.
For further assistance regarding specific insurance plans or payment methods, please reach out to our admissions office. We are here to help you navigate your path to healing at the Austen Riggs Center.
