Great Lakes Recovery Adolescent Center

About

Situated on a vast 32-acre property, Great Lakes Recovery Center for adolescents is a residential facility dedicated to helping young individuals aged 12-17 overcome substance abuse while offering relapse prevention strategies. The center is staffed by compassionate professionals who provide comprehensive support, focusing on the overall well-being of each client. They assist residents in honing essential life skills, fostering healthy relationships, healing from trauma, and sustaining sobriety. Patients receive their education on-site, participating in two group therapy sessions each day alongside individual and family therapy on a weekly basis. The educational program at Great Lakes Recovery is structured to create a nurturing, home-like environment, enabling patients to continue their education even while undergoing treatment. The facility features comfortable semi-private bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a communal living area with a television, shared meal times, an enclosed courtyard, and various recreational amenities including an outdoor basketball court and walking trails. A certified Special Education teacher is available to accommodate clients' diverse academic needs, including GED preparation when necessary. A medical provider and nurse are also present to ensure comprehensive healthcare, addressing both medical and dental concerns. The on-site classroom benefits from ample natural light and scenic views, creating an inviting atmosphere equipped with comfortable desks, laptops designated for educational activities, headphones, a dry erase board, and presentation tools such as a projector and smart board. A Great Lakes Recovery counselor is assigned to oversee classroom activities, ensuring a favorable adult-to-student ratio. Upon admission, school records from the patient's previous educational institution are acquired, which aids the teacher in crafting relevant lesson plans. Weekly academic performance reports are compiled, and recommendations for continued education are provided to the local school district. Additionally, a school psychologist is available to assist in developing and managing individualized education plans. Great Lakes Recovery Center supplies all necessary books, materials, and transportation for students. Family involvement is integral to the treatment process at Great Lakes Recovery Center. Each patient is paired with a primary counselor who conducts weekly individual therapy sessions. Clients engage in several group therapy sessions daily, which involve discussions on various topics and collaborative activities. Family members complete a questionnaire as part of the admission procedure, allowing the primary counselor to integrate their insights into the patient's treatment strategy. Primary counselors maintain communication regarding the patient’s progress and facilitate family therapy sessions, which can be conducted in person or virtually. The center is equipped to support young individuals with co-occurring disorders, offering medication management, education, and specialized clinical treatment that utilizes evidence-based practices. Residents participate in a variety of experiential and recreational therapies aimed at enhancing their healing journey. Music therapy sessions, which include playing instruments, songwriting, and vocal performance, promote emotional expression and the development of healthy coping strategies. Art therapy encourages creativity through diverse projects, offering alternative methods to manage trauma and intense emotions. Within the expansive campus, clients have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of recreational activities, including hiking, basketball, fitness sessions, and seasonal outdoor sports such as swimming, volleyball, and skiing. Seasonal equine therapy is also offered at a nearby location, where patients can learn horse care as part of their therapeutic experience. The Through Our Eyes initiative introduces participants to photography, enabling them to capture images around the campus that align with monthly themes. The Bridges program facilitates interactions between adolescent patients and local seniors in assisted living settings, promoting community bonds through games and shared activities. Service learning projects give clients a chance to contribute to their community through various initiatives, such as assisting senior citizens, engaging with individuals with special needs, reading to children in daycare, and helping to cultivate community gardens. Furthermore, on-staff Acupuncture Detoxification Specialists provide auricular therapy to enhance the detoxification experience and induce relaxation, serving as an alternative healing modality. Other holistic approaches include meditation, the use of essential oils, guided visualizations, and the option of herbal teas and foot baths, enriching the overall therapeutic experience at Great Lakes Recovery Center.
