About
Spring Lake Ranch is dedicated to assisting individuals dealing with mental health challenges and substance use disorders by offering them avenues for personal development and meaningful engagement. This center employs a distinctive approach centered on work-related therapy, where the essence of daily activities revolves around purposeful labor. Residents have the option to join one of four distinct crews—Farm, Gardens, Shop, or Woods—allowing them to collaborate closely with both peers and staff throughout their workday. While the Ranch emphasizes the therapeutic benefits derived from work, it also acknowledges the necessity of comprehensive clinical support that aids clients in navigating the complexities associated with mental health and substance abuse issues. Each individual benefits from extensive support, including personalized and group therapy sessions, psychiatric assistance, medication oversight, case management, and programs focused on substance abuse, complemented by guidance from non-clinical staff within a team-oriented framework. This approach enriches the significance of leading a sustainable lifestyle. Daily responsibilities such as animal care, planting and harvesting crops, constructing structures, or gathering firewood instill routine and a sense of purpose through engaging work. Participation in the Work Program empowers clients, allowing them to cultivate self-esteem and a sense of achievement by completing projects while engaging in therapeutic dialogues with staff and fellow residents throughout the journey.
Established in 1932, Spring Lake Ranch was founded by Wayne Sarcka, a Finnish immigrant, and his wife, Elizabeth Man, who hailed from Long Island. Wayne gained experience working with traumatized British soldiers in youth camps during World War I in Mesopotamia, while Elizabeth, whose brother faced schizophrenia, served as a social worker in a New York settlement. The life experiences and compassionate support fostered through the Work Program are reflected in the many positive testimonials and success stories. Spring Lake Ranch is recognized by CARF and offers a unique experience compared to other rehabilitation facilities.
